How old is World Savings Day?
Isn’t it longer than Malaysia’s Independence Day? Actually, World Savings Day has been celebrated for nearly 100 years.

At the beginning of its establishment, only a few countries participated in celebrating World Savings Day, namely Austria, Italy, Belgium, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Germany, India, Indonesia, and a few other small countries.

The Objective of the Establishment of World Savings Day

The main purpose of establishing World Savings Day is to instill a saving culture in individuals all around the world. This is because, since the outbreak of the World War I, many of their people lacked of confidence to save because some of them went bankrupt, lost their source of income and suffered from depression and poverty.

Savings banks have collaborated with schools, offices, sports clubs, and women's organizations to promote savings campaigns. After World War II, World Savings Day had an increasingly positive response. Several countries have celebrated this historic day since then. (Source : Versa)

In 1921, Spain was the first to record a day dedicated to thrift. Meanwhile, in Germany, the belief in saving had to be revived after their people almost lost everything they owned in the economic renewal of 1923. After World War II, World Thrift Day continued and reached the height of its popularity between 1955 and 1970. (Source : aa.com.tr)

They also believe that through the practice of saving, the standard of living can be improved. In addition, it can ensure a better future by pursuing higher education.
